What is kinesiology tape

Updated: Dec 5, 2022

What is kinesiology tape and how do we use it and how can you use it. If you watch any kind of sports you may have seen these tapes on athletes shoulders, forearms or legs but didn’t know what there purpose is. These flexible tapes can help to maintain alignment of an adjustment, can be used to provide compression to an area, can help increase circulation, relieve pain and most often are used for general support of a muscle or ligament. Kinesio tape was invented about 50 years ago by a chiropractor named Dr. Kenso Kase, DC.

These tapes are often applied by professionals such as chiropractors, physical therapists and sports trainers who have knowledge of the human anatomy, tendons, muscles, ligaments etc. They have been trained to recognize muscle, tendon and ligament strains and when tapes such at this can be of some help in recovery or general support. Some therapists and doctors may even be Certified Kinesio Taping Practitioners (CKTP).

More than just tape, these are flexible and that flexibility has a purpose as well as it can provide some tension when applied correctly.

Below you will see a couple examples of where these tapes are applied.

There is a small learning curve to applying these tapes, see the video below to get an idea as to how the amount of stretch applied is important to the function of the tape.

Not all tapes are the same, we here at Living Well NEK prefer the Rock Tape. This tape is best purchased in long rolls so you can just cut it to the length you want. Rock Tape was also found to stick and hold longer even after showering than other tapes do.

So try some out for yourself. Feel free to speak with Dr. Francine about these tapes and if they might be good for you.
